This might be too mature for some homeschoolers, but if you have a bright and penetrating
high-schooler who enjoys comic books, this could be an interesting and
free course.
Gender Through Comics: A Super MOOC is a massive open online course coming this spring. The course will examine how comic books can be used to
explore questions of gender identity, stereotypes, and roles.
Designed for college-age and
lifelong learners, the course is led by Christina Blanch of Ball State University, and uses a
study of comic books incorporating interactive video lectures,
online discussions between students, and real-time socially driven
interviews.
The class will feature interviews with the comic industry's biggest names, such as
Terry Moore, Brian K Vaughan and Mark Waid; and will address
questions of gender representations and constructions involving both men
and women.
